Seasoning Your Humidor

Before using your humidor for the first time, it’s crucial to prepare the interior properly. This process helps the wood lining regulate moisture and maintain the ideal relative humidity for your cigars. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  • Clean the Interior
Remove any manufacturing dust by wiping down the interior with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Add Humidity
    For new or unused humidors:
  • Place a shallow bowl of distilled water inside the humidor.
  • Close the lid and let it sit for 12–24 hours.
  • If a significant amount of water evaporates, refill the bowl and repeat the process for another 24 hours.
  • Continue until the water stops evaporating.

Alternatively, lightly dampen a cloth with distilled water (not soaked) and wipe down the interior wood. Avoid over-saturating the wood to prevent warping.

Charging the Humidifier

Once the humidor is seasoned, it’s time to prepare the humidifier device. Follow these steps:

  • Remove the humidifier (typically a sponge-like plastic insert) from the box.
  • Submerge it in distilled water or a humidifier solution for 30 minutes.
  • Let it sit on a paper towel for an additional 30 minutes to remove excess water and prevent leakage.
  • Place the humidifier securely inside the humidor, using velcro or magnets if applicable.

Your humidor is now seasoned, charged, and ready to protect your cigars.

Humidity Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Low Humidity Levels

If the humidity drops below ideal levels:

  • Check the Hygrometer: Ensure the humidifier doesn’t need a refill or re-soaking.
  • Re-Soak as Needed: Typically, re-soaking every 2–3 weeks keeps the humidity steady. In drier environments, re-soak every 1–1.5 weeks.
  • Monitor Levels: Aim for 68–72% relative humidity (RH). Some preferences may vary slightly, but avoid levels below 64%.
  • Additional Tips: Add humidity packs, gel jars, or small shallow bowls of distilled water as needed.

High Humidity Levels

If the humidity becomes too high:

  • Open the humidor lid partially to allow excess moisture to escape.
  • Add cigars to absorb moisture naturally.
  • Use a dry object (such as an unscented packet or additional gel) to regulate levels.

Monitor the levels and close the humidor once the RH stabilizes within the desired range.
